The offline RPGs worth your storage space

The offline RPGs worth your storage space

Mobile RPGs have a bad habit of being always-online, which defeats the whole point of a portable game. So we went hunting for the ones you can actually play on a flight. The best of the bunch respect both your battery and your data plan.

Emberfall Chronicles tops our list right now. Turn-based combat, a story with real choices, and a difficulty curve that trusts you to get better. It's the closest thing to a handheld console RPG you'll find without a cartridge.

A few tips if you're starting fresh: download on Wi-Fi first, because offline RPGs tend to be chunky. Check the save system before you get invested — the good ones save automatically and often. And don't sleep on the slower openers; some of these games take an hour to show their hand.

The common thread is pacing. Offline RPGs can't lean on daily logins to keep you hooked, so they live or die on writing and combat. That ends up making them better, honestly.
